If you’re a thief in Bal Harbour, Florida, you may want to give second thoughts to that stealing habit, as the cops may be able to track your every step without you knowing it. For some, such as the Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Holy family in Christian circles, at least, they are getting tagged with GPS trackers to protect themselves.

Yes, that’s right: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the family known throughout at least 2,000 years of history as being the Earthly family, as well as the infant babe, born supposedly on Christmas morning, the Son of God, or at least their likenesses, were stolen from a display in the city’s Founder’s Circle, and the fact that the figures were bolted down seemingly did nothing to impede the crooks.

Charging to save the day, much like the cavalry, Jeffrey Harris, a Jewish attorney from Cincinnati, took to task replacing the stolen baby Jesus with a new Jesus figure for the nativity scene. Harris had read about the holiday-season theft online and evidently felt compelled to restore the Christian figure to the display in a town far from his own.

The statue, part of a nativity scene in the city’s Founder’s Circle, will be equipped with the device after a previous baby statue went missing, even though it had been bolted down.

According to a [1] report on the WKMG, new statues for the virgin mother, [2] Mary, as well as [3] Jesus‘ earthly father, a carpenter named [4] Joseph, will all be put back on public display, albeit behind a four-foot high Plexiglas screen, and will each be tagged with GPS tracking devices, according to Dina Cellini, the overseer of the display.

The GPS units, according to Cellini, were purchased using contributions made by local residents, with at least one large contribution — Harris’ donation of the Jesus figure — and possibly other out-of-area donations. That, I am guessing, was to clarify that taxpayer funds weren’t used for the purchase of GPS units for "Christian" figures, though, for other uses, it likely wouldn’t have faced opposition.

"I don’t anticipate this will ever happen again," Cellini was quoted as saying in the WKMG story, adding, "but we may need to rely on technology to save our savior."

In all, it’s a bad day when people go around stealing city decorations during the holidays. I don’t care what religion — or lack of religion — a person may be. Theft, in any form, is always wrong.
