Despite statements by the FBI and other over the past few days that terrorist attacks in the U.S. have been thwarted, and in court today, saying that “the terror issue” has been disrupted by the arrest of Najibullah Zazi, 24, along with his father, and a Muslim holy man.
“We are investigating a wide range of leads related to this alleged conspiracy, and we will continue to work around the clock to ensure that anyone involved is brought to justice,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement. “We believe any imminent threat arising from this case has been disrupted, but as always, we remind the American public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.”
While Zazi has been stopped, at least for now, it seems there are at least more than a few others in the U.S. with ill-will toward the country, set on causing death and destruction. This is what’s at the heart of the War on Terror, and ultimately, what our fine men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces are fighting against in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere in the world. Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. hasn’t been victim of a successful terror attack.
In Zazi’s case, the FBI wasn’t ready to close the case or make an arrest, but it seems a certain imam (a Muslim “holy man”), Ahmad Wais Afzali, who was working as an informant for the FBI, decided to play Benedict Arnold and tip Zazi to the sting operation.
Not long after the court hearing ended in Zazi’s case, authorities in Springfield, Illinois said they arrested 29-year-old Michael C. Finton (aka Talib Islam), from Decatur, Illinois, who wanted to blow up a Federal courthouse to cause damage and death.
Fortunately, Finton isn’t very bright. The FBI was involved with him in his plan to detonate an explosive-laden vehicle using a cellphone. The only problem was the FBI didn’t put explosives in the vehicle.
Then, later in the day today, the FBI, which has been kept busy over the past week with these terror plots, said it had stopped yet a third plot.
Late today, the FBI said it had arrested Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a Jordanian citizen for attempting to bomb Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper in downtown Dallas. In making the statement, the FBI said the “public was never at risk.”
Why was the public never in danger in Dallas? Because Smadi was dealing with a few undercover FBI agents, and when he went to detonate his bomb today, an inert/inactive car bomb, he found out he had been played a fool and his “self-jihad” was not going to happen, fortunately.
Smadi, who was FBI says is an illegal alien, allegedly told the undercover agents he came to the U.S. specifically to commit “Jihad for the sake of God.” Somebody, quick — give him a large, yet non-lethal dose of injectable potassium. Tell him it will kill him and let him practice the dying part of the jihad for his wacko “god” that wants the U.S. attacked.
No matter how you slice it, there have been at least three high-profile attempts by enemies of the United States to do harm and attempt to kill Americans in less than a week.
As Attorney General Holder said, “The American public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.” Keeping your eyes open, being alert to anything that’s just not quite right, as well as anyone — especially a stranger — who is a little more helpful or interested in something than normal, call the authorities to allow them to sort things out.
Making that call may mean the difference between a terrorist being successful in bringing damage and death to the U.S., or a terrorist landing in prison. Isn’t it sad that Guantanamo is being closed?
