A cross-dressing teen, also known as a transgendered teen, who lives in Florida says a McDonald’s restaurant refused to let him interview for a job.
At the age of 17, the teen decided to file a discrimination complaint against the restaurant, located in Orlando, with the Florida Commission on Human Relations.
The teen, Zikerria Bellamy, claims two McDonald’s managers refused to interview him after he applied for a job. He also says one of the managers later left him a strongly-worded voicemail message. That voicemail message included a gay slur.
The 17-year-old Bellamy is male but says she has been living as a woman for about six years.
A McDonald’s spokeswoman says the company planned to issue a statement later today in response.
The New York-based Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund filed the complaint on Bellamy’s behalf.
Aside from the one derogatory comment on the voicemail, it seems like there may well be other issues involved, including what Bellamy may or may not have said to at least one of the managers.
The wisest thing for the managers to have done would have simply not have hired Bellamy – or call him. People are not hired all the time, but it’s when someone who is stupid or arrogant goes out of their way to tell someone “you’re not hired!” that things get messy.
Things also get messy when you attempt to get hired, say, as a woman but you’re not, which makes you a liar. That is one of the fastest ways to not get a job than it is to get hired and fired for anything else.
