Mother who murdered baby in microwave given life sentence
A Dayton, Ohio jury, though not reaching a consensus, convicted a local woman to life in prison without the chance of parole in the horrific, sense-overwhelming, and logic-defying murder of her daughter.
China Arnold, who decided not to be present in the courtroom when the verdict was read, was sentenced for killing her baby daughter by cooking her in a microwave oven. Of all the horrendous, hideous ways to kill a person, Ms. China Arnold, of Dayton, Ohio, added one more way to kill a person, namely, an infant.
The now-28-year-old China Arnold now gets to sit her butt in prison, rotting away for the rest of her life. She gets to be nothing more than a burden on society, costing tens of thousands of dollars each year just for sitting in her cell.
Because the jury could not reach a consensus on the punishment, China Arnold managed to avoid the death penalty. In some ways, I’m glad she did, but in other ways, I’m sad that she didn’t get sentenced to death.
When someone kills a child, and I will apologize to no one for my views, that person ought be taken out, strung up by multiple strands of fishing line, and a sign placed beneath them, inviting the public to engage in carrying out a fitting death penalty. In China Arnold’s case, though, short of finding a giant microwave oven and tossing her in to cook, as she did to her baby, I see nothing fitting.
Allowing China Arnold to rot in prison, ensuring she remains healthy and has a long life to reflect on her actions, though, may prove to be a more fitting punishment in this instance.
