Do one thing, and be the best

I was taught early in life to be a Jack-of-all-trades, a master of none, and to excel at all I do. Yes, it was that Type A personality stuff pushed upon me. Even before that, as far as I recall, and from everything I’ve been told about my early childhood, I am a Type A personality by-birth.
The only problem with being told to be a Jack-of-all-trades and a master of none is that I could not live with that. Anything I set out to do, I had to do well. If I had a project, I had to see it through to the end, accomplish it by the deadline, if not before, and it had to be great.
There are a few things where I learned, where I mastered the things I do, so the saying, for the most part, was wasted on me. I did, however, learn to be the proverbial Jack-of-all-trades, and it’s been a great help throughout life with the many things I’ve undertaken.
That brings up to the topic today, about do one thing, and be the best at that very thing.
[1] Wired magazine, in its January 2007 edition (okay, they are a little early), says [2] WordPress, software designed to publish and manage millions of blogs. is ranked seventh on its top 10 list of [3] Web 2.0 Acquisition Bait targets. Wired wrote
7. WORDPRESS The new de rigueur blog-management software, WordPress is favored by the majority of high-traffic posters. One caveat: It’s open source and unlikely to accept a corporate come-on.
It goes to show that if you do one thing, do it really well, people will notice.
Others on Wired’s list include Facebook, Digg, and Technorati. Want the complete scoop and all the sites? Check out [3] Wired’s story, then learn about [2] WordPress, the open-source content management system that provides the backbone for this blog.
