I went to the Dr Pepper site to see how it was holding up during the Chinese Democracy launch free Dr Pepper giveaway promotion has now been underway for just over 13½ hours. What did I find? That my thoughts of a server crash had panned out.
In my original post about the Dr Pepper free 20-ounce soda for all Americans because Guns N’ Roses’ album, Chinese Democracy has hit store shelves after 17 years in the making, I noted that planning by the Dr Pepper IT staff was a critical factor in this promotion.
In fact, in my post, ‘Chinese Democracy’ earns free Dr Pepper to everyone in U.S., I wrote:
Why does planning need to be considered, aside from the economics in these cash-strapped days when the Big Three automakers are begging for billions of dollars, banks are seeking bailouts, and others are going belly up? Planning comes into the picture when you look at the details, the coupons will be available on the Dr Pepper site for only 24 hours.
At 1:37 p.m. Eastern time (-0500), Firefox resulted in a blank white page. No error message, no nothing. Internet Explorer offered a little explanation, at least. Here’s the screenshot:
I registered just after midnight, so I’m monitoring the site just out of curiosity, wanting to see how well the Dr Pepper/Snapple IT staff handles the load, as well as server crashes. It’s surprising better planning wasn’t done, including for load balancing. Oh well, chalk it up to a good learning experience and work on doing things right next time.
In the meantime, keep hitting that refresh button on your browser so the page loads when possible. In fact, since I’ve already registered, here’s the direct link to the registration page, just in case you can access that page before the Dr Pepper homepage is available again. Register for your free coupon at the free Dr Pepper registration page. Hint: Right-click on the link to copy the link location.
