Sadish Balasubramanian (aka Sadish Bala), developer of the WPThemeShop.com, held a contest to name his latest free theme which gives a warm and welcoming feel of a summer morning walk through a forest. After running for nine days, Sadish closed the theme-naming competition yesterday, Sunday, August 20.
When Sadish closed the competition, which he said drew more responses than he anticipated — 31 posts offering up 78 suggested names — was started on August 11, he said he would announce the winner today, Monday, August 21. He kept his word.
True to his word, this morning, at 8:40 a.m., Sadish posted the name of his latest free theme, which will be released to the WordPress community-at-large on September 1. In making the announcement, Sadish said:
“Just like me, most people saw some kind of:
‘Hope for the Future’,
‘A new Beginning’,
‘A Glorious Start’, and
‘Divinity’ in that header image.”
He continued, noting the “header image was the inspiration for many of names suggested by the participants.” He added that he was playing around with many different images for the theme during development, but when he added the final image, “I felt a completeness when I put this image into it.” Agreed. The image is warm and welcoming, like a walk on a summer morning through the hills and mountains of West Virginia, Georgia, Vermont, or any of a number of other locations in this glorious world of ours. The theme is inspirational and motivational in appearance, and functional in design.
In the end, it was a combination of three suggestions for theme names that won the day, not any one name in particular, Sadish wrote in the announcement. He opted to name the new theme Glorious Day, which he created as a result of the suggested names below:
- Blessed day, suggested by Raquel, who writes at http://sallaberry.embora.com.br/
- Holy Light, suggested by Jochen Van de Velde, who writes at http://www.playstationgamenews.info/
- Majestic Glory, suggested by … Dave J. (Scoop0901), the author of this post ;)
Sadish said the new theme will be made available on September 1, and will be available for download in the Free Themes section of his WPThemeShop.com. He also hinted about another theme-naming contest in the near future.
In looking at Sadish’s new theme, Glorious Day, the thing I like is that it offers an insight — or should offer an insight into the thinking and feeling behind the site where it is used. Like any good theme or site design, one ought get a feeling of the intent the site’s owner had in creating the feel. For corporate sites, often only one or two colors, there’s often just a “feel” of plainness. For the corporate world, that often may be the best approach, though that mentality is starting to change as more and more Web 2.0 things begin finding a home on even some of the formerly stoic corporate sites.
For a personal theme, and, more importantly for this competition, a site or blog theme, a look and feel of the site’s writer should come across immediately when the site is displayed. A statement about the “tone” of the site should be immediately known just by looking, not by actually having to begin reading.
The entire experience, if you will, begins with the visual message received when someone first looks at a site. It’s much like that “curb appeal” stuff real estate professionals often tell home owners looking to sell property to consider: what’s the first impression people get when the pull up to this property? For sites and blogs, it’s that same kind of thing: What’s the first impression people get when your page displays in their browser? It is sometimes just that impression that keeps someone on the site or encourages them to move along to another site.
